THE BIG EGG HUNT - 'NEW FOUND'

THE BIG EGG HUNT - 'NEW FOUND'

While Kiwis were sleeping, 100 giant eggs created by New Zealand artists were hidden across the country in the early hours of the morning ready to be discovered as part of The Whittaker’s Big Egg Hunt in support of Starship. The works of art secretly popped up in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch overnight, allowing the public to take part in the hunt from today until 7 April.

Artists who have created eggs include Askew One, Alexander Bartleet, Dean Proudfoot, Dick Frizzell, Flox, Keven Mealamu, Mervyn Williams, Misery, Reuben Paterson, Rod Emmerson, WORLD and Zambesi. The Whittaker’s Big Egg Hunt will raise funds for the Starship Foundation, a social-profit organisation which supports the national children’s hospital to provide world-leading care for more than 120,000 patient visits each year. All 100 eggs, each a unique masterpiece, will be auctioned off for Starship – 80 of them on Trade Me and 20 of them at a gala event on 31 March in Auckland. This egg has been selected to be auctioned at the gala event.

Alex Bartleet's egg is made out of thousands of real found objects which are covered in resin and paint and outlined. He aims to make ordinary or discarded objects extraordinary, and believes that by recontextualising them in his work, and bringing groups of objects together, they can be renewed and reconsidered.

See The Big Egg Hunt website for more details about the event.

The Artist’s Studio | Alex Bartleet

Artist Aliance caught up with artist Alex Bartleet in his studio at AUT University where he is currently completing his Post Graduate Honours degree. Visiting artists’ studios has to be one of our favourite activities, but when it’s also in an art school during term holidays it’s even better. So much work on the go, far from the polished, pristine work we get to see at the end of year grad shows…a privilege to see so much work in the creative stage. Watch the video bellow and read the article here.
